ART FOR PROGRESS presents Lu Kun and Selma Karaca in
“The Art of Design” Spring 2008 Collections
September 6th, 2007 - 6:00pm - AVEvenue, 15 West 28th Street, 10th Floor
September 11, 2007 (New York, NY) – In the menagerie of designers showing this week, two remarkable emerging talents have managed to stand apart. Lu Kun and Selma Karaca exhibited how fashion becomes art in their most capable hands. The 6pm show started with Karaca's intricately hand-detailed collection, featuring multiple layers of silk and rope. The line was inspired by nature and movement, with an emphasis on sculptural structure. It was a true convergence of art and fashion.
Lu Kun showed a bold ready-to-wear line inspired by the upcoming Beijing Olympics. His body-conscious collection held athletic references from past, present and future, while the use of silks and metallics reflected a streamlined, futuristic approach. As a young Shanghai designer, his work clearly reflected how art informs fashion. Look to see him next year in the Creative China exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The Avenue Events Loft doubled as a gallery, in keeping with AFP’s mission to provide exposure for multiple art forms. Fashion photography by Damian Sandone was displayed, with an installation by student Michael Walton featured his own cocktail dresses. The after-party also held performances by Patrice Miller, a talented modern dancer, and sets by Art For Progress DJ’s Rob Paterson, JP Solis and Mark Fields.
